Police Department History
In The Beginning June 5, 1876, the borough of Stewartstown appointed William Fulton and Ephniam Lynch as Policemen & Lamplighters for Stewartstown Borough. These were the first police officers employed by Stewartstown Borough. Stewartstown Police Department 1940 to 1950 From October, 1941 to December 3, 1942 there were no police officers in Stewartstown. But due to the gambling, bootlegging of alcohol and prostitution, the Borough Council voted to hire Sam Irvin as the Borough Police Officer. Officer Irwin came from the Delta Police Department. On January 7, 1943 the Borough Council voted to buy a 1937 Chevy coupe as a police car. Prior to 1943, the borough police rode a motorcycle. The policeman's salary was $100 per month from December 3, 1942 until January 1946 when it was raised to $135 per month. In 1948 Officer Irwin's salary was raised to $150 per month.
